History of the Mazda MX-5 Miata, Part 2
We have previously discussed the creation and first two generations of the titular Mazda MX-5 Miata. Now we will cover the most recent generations, as well as where Mazda may be taking their most popular historic vehicle in the future. The Miata has seen some relatively large changes in the past, and the third generation of the Mazda Miata had a widebody design that provided slightly more room in the cabin.
Third Generation of the Miata
The 2006 model year marked the beginning of the Miata’s third generation, with a modern design and many amenities such as a power retractable hardtop option coming a year later. This was fantastic for people who were frustrated with the Mazda Miata’s seat covers or soft top being manually retracted and deployed. This retractable roof was a major success, as it only added a manageable 100 lbs to the total weight of the vehicle, and condensed itself into the same space as the soft top when down.
The third generation also got a facelift and driving upgrades to make it much more efficient around corners. Fans of the iconic sports car were very pleased with these changes, and the Miata MX-5 saw a resurgence in popularity throughout the early 2010s.
Fourth Generation Miata
In 2016 Mazda unveiled the newest Miata generation, an even smaller, safer, and sharper version of the classic. The design of this generation was incredibly attractive, getting away from the cute or playful descriptions that previous models had maintained. Special anniversary Mazda Miata colors were made available to celebrate the 30th production year for the car and the century mark for Mazda as a company during this generation.
Future of the Miata
The Mazda MX-5 Miata is likely going to be a lasting staple for the Japanese manufacturer for many years to come, and many are speculating on what the next generation will bring. It is very likely that fuel economy will be a major factor for the next Miata, and many believe that the future will include hybrid and electric models.
